Opinion: Ohio needs flexible energy sources quickly

By Advanced Energy United
August 25, 2026

Ohio is at a pivotal moment in its energy future. The rapid growth of data centers and other large electricity users is accelerating demand for power faster than ever before. This surge is putting pressure on PJM, the organization that manages the region’s transmission grid, to keep the lights on and keep costs down for businesses and households.

The electric utilities in Ohio that manage the distribution grid — the poles and wires in neighborhoods — rely on PJM to connect large-scale energy projects to the transmission grid. The old way of connecting power to the grid isn’t working, but by modernizing how energy projects get connected, and by embracing faster-to-build energy projects, PJM still can help Ohio meet its growing energy needs.

PJM, which serves Ohio and more than 66 million Americans across 13 states, recently issued its own report admitting that the grid isn’t keeping up with growing energy needs. It’s a supply and demand problem; because there isn’t enough electricity available, the price that power companies pay for electricity jumped by 54% in just one year. These higher costs are likely to be passed on to families and businesses.
